She’d been apologising in advance that it was humble and yet, as key turned through lock and door opened, the room shone with all the warmth of a home. A shopping list upon a chalkboard, postcards on the refrigerator, walls with the same black-white photography of Paris that finds its way into houses everywhere. We stood in the entrance of a large room, a living room and kitchen in one. In one corner was an armchair and a small settee, a wood burner with a flue disappearing into the upper wall, a wicker basket with blocks of wood, a newspaper and box of matches inside, pine needles and bark piling into drifts upon the floor beside it.

‘Maria… do you think I could perhaps have a shower?’

I’m as polite as polite can be. She smiles my way… such a smile that girl had, not quite enough to have me abandon records and start a new life in Oregon, but there was real purity in that smile of hers, a good soul. She opens drawers, hands me a towel, doesn’t say a word… just points to a door in the corner.
